Here are answers to the questions I hear most frequently.
Why write your own book? When I first started researching English Setters, I found some excellent books on the market but most were geared towards conformation or upland bird hunting. Although these are very important aspects of the English Setter breed, they're only a part of the overall picture. Having worked with English Setter rescue, I realized that English Setters are marvelous dogs regardless of what they look like and if they prefer pointing butterflies to quail. It does not make them any less of an English Setter; they still have the same instincts and same behavioral characteristics. So I wanted to print something that gave a brief overview and showed the incredible physical variety in the breed. "Setterly Yours," features Llewellins, Laveracks, Rymans, and just about everything in between! Yes, there is a bias towards rescue in this book but, having been witness to the number of marvelous English Setters who never make it out of a shelter, how could I do anything else?
Are these all your photographs? No. I have one regular model that is probably featured a few too many times in this book. I've taken photographs of plenty of the English Setters with whom I've come into contact but not enough of the quality necessary to compile a large format photography book. After begging and borrowing photos from talented friends, I turned to the wonderful world of Flickr. On Flickr I found an incredible wealth of amateur photographers with absolutely amazing gifts. I think you'll agree, after browsing through the book, that the affection each photographer has for their Setter subject comes through loud and clear. The responses I had from the various photographers were overwhelmingly positive and supportive. I am delighted to say that there are English Setters loved in just about every corner of the world and I have photographs from India, Italy, Russia, Spain, Norway, and throughout the United States to prove it!
Why self-publish? In terms of creative control, nothing beats self-publishing. Of course, you're also on your own if your book crashes and burns! I wanted "Setterly Yours," to be a different kind of breed book and I'm not so sure that everyone shared my vision. I chose Blurb because of the availability of high quality large-format books using Print-On-Demand technology. Yes, their prices are high but I thought it was important that the photographs be showcased as they deserved.
How many English Setters do you have? Only one. And he keeps me very very busy. I have had the privilege of fostering nine wonderful English Setters within the past few years and I participate regularly in activities that allow me meet more English Setters. Every one of them has reinforced what an amazing breed this is. I also share my home with two Golden Retrievers and a Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever, all great dogs in their own right. But I can't deny that I have a favorite...
